How to Decide What Is the Best Pump for Your Industry?

There are many industries like irrigation, supply of water for domestic use, desalination and petrochemical industries that need pumps to draw water. However, carefully selecting whether a vertical turbine pump or a horizontal turbine pump suits your needs the best is important. Before we get into which pump suits our industry the best, we must first have an understanding of how these pumps are different from one another.

Vertical turbine pumps

They are a kind of centrifugal pump that are designed to move water from a well or an underground reservoir. Unlike most of the other submersible pumps where the motor is located at the bottom of the pump, the motor of these pumps is located above the ground. Since these pumps go below the ground, it protects the equipment and liquid against extreme heat of cold temperatures. The motor is connected by a long vertical shaft to impellers which are at the bottom of the pump. However, despite what the name suggests, there is no turbine in vertical turbine pumps. They are powered either by A.C. electric induction motor or by a diesel engine through a right angle drive. Cooling water pumps are usually vertical pumps.

Horizontal Pumps

These are multi-stage centrifugal pumps that are also used to draw water, but horizontal pumps in India are mainly for things like irrigation, domestic water supply or for sewage plants. The internal parts of this type of pump are accessible thus making it easier to install and maintain. These pumps cannot operate in high temperature environments and take up considerably larger amounts of space than vertical pumps.

The basic difference between vertical and horizontal pumps is the orientation of the shaft. A horizontal pump will have its shaft placed horizontally, while the shaft is placed vertically in a vertical pump.

How to choose between a vertical pump and a horizontal pump?

Wind Speed and direction

The functioning of the vertical turbine pumps is not dependent on the speed and direction of the wind. However, a horizontal pump will only work if the wind blows at the right angles to the blade. If the wind blows in a different direction the pump draws comparatively less energy from the wind.

Where is the pump located?

A vertical turbine pump is compact in design and can be used in a variety of applications like a seawater pump, where the sea water is used to circulate water for various applications on board a ship or a marine vessel. Horizontal pumps require a much larger place as they have high towers and long blades.

What is wind energy efficiency?

Since the blades are in the right angles to the wind, horizontal pumps are able to convert more wind energy into useful mechanical motion. In case of vertical pumps, they capture the energy of the wind only in the front, thus not unable to make full use of wind energy.

Does your application require pumps to perform well in high pressure environments?

If your industry requires a centrifugal pump that needs to work in a high stress environment, you should go for vertical pumps. Vertical pumps are designed to withstand high stress. Vertical pumps work quite well even if the temperatures are extreme.  To get the best quality vertical turbine pumps in India log on to www.flowmorepumps.com.
